Learn why scented candles tunnel, how to fix it, and how to prevent it with proper burn and wick care. Practical advice for longer-lasting candles.
Quick answer
Candle tunneling happens when the wax melts only in the center, leaving a hard rim. The fix is to let the candle burn long enough on the first use to create a full melt pool, and to trim the wick to ¼ inch before each burn.
Why tunneling matters
A tunneled candle wastes wax and shortens burn time. It also makes the candle harder to light later because the wick sinks below the wax surface. Once the tunnel reaches the bottom, you lose half the candle you paid for.
What causes tunneling
Most tunneling is caused by burning the candle for too short a time. If you snuff it out before the wax pool reaches the container edge, the wax near the glass never melts. Over time, that outer wax builds up into a hard ring.
A wick that is too short or too long also contributes. A short wick produces a small flame that cannot spread heat to the edges. A long wick creates a tall, smoky flame that burns unevenly.
Is it fixable?
If the tunnel is shallow (less than 1 cm deep), you can often correct it. Use a heat gun or hairdryer on low to soften the outer wax, then pour the melted wax into the center. Let it cool and burn as normal. If the tunnel is deep or the wick is buried, the candle is probably beyond saving.
Diagnosis and fix
- Symptom: Wax melts only in the center; a hard ring of unmelted wax remains around the edge.
- Likely cause: First burn was too short (less than 1 hour per inch of diameter), or the wick was not trimmed to ¼ inch before lighting.
- Corrective action: For a shallow tunnel, use a heat tool to melt the outer wax and pour it into the center. For mild tunneling, wrap foil around the rim to trap heat on the next burn. Always burn long enough on the first use so the melt pool reaches the edge. If the tunnel is deeper than 1 cm or the wick is buried, stop. The candle cannot be saved.
Product facts
- Scented Candle small: Scented Candle small is made from fine bone china and measures 6 cm tall by 5.5 cm wide. The narrow diameter means the melt pool reaches the edge faster, reducing tunneling risk compared to wider candles.
